Alleged hijacker caught in the act in Yeoville thanks to good work by police

JOBURG – A 22-year-old suspect is expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrates' Court for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Yeoville police officers arrested a suspect who allegedly attempted to hijack a white BMW 320i on the corner of Joe Slovo Road and Francis Street, Yeoville on 16 May.

According to the station’s spokesperson, Captain Sifiso Mabizela, Constable Ntokozo Mbhele, Constable Alugumi Tshikororo, and Seargent Thabiso Masuku heard gun shots while patrolling and responded rapidly to the scene of the crime.

“Upon their arrival, they saw two black males running out of the BMW and they gave chase towards them. One of the suspects was apprehended by Constable Mbhele. After having being positively identified by one of the victims, he was arrested,” Mabizela said.

The other suspect who was allegedly carrying a firearm and fled the scene.

Investigations are underway to secure his arrest.

“The arrested suspect, aged 22, will appear in Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances,” said Mabizela.
