No more candles for Albertina

JOBURG – 'They [candles] caused too many fires in this community and, as a result, a lot of people lost their shelter.'

Jumpas informal settlement resident Albertina Duze said she will no longer use a candle after she received a solar light from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church recently.

Albertina said the solar lights will help the informal settlement as a whole.

“We are tired of candles. They have caused too many fires in this community and, as a result, a lot of people lost their shelter,” she said.

Albertina lives with her 12-year-old granddaughter Ithandile Duze, who attends school at Denver Secondary.

The 12-year-old said she is very happy, as she will no longer have to worry about doing her schoolwork.

“I can now do my homework until 8pm without worrying that the candle will get finished,” she said.
