Clean Village group hopes to expand

KENSINGTON – 'We clear the pathways that have been overgrown with grass, pick up litter and generally tidy up.'

Clean Village, a non-profit organisation in Kensington, is pleading for donations.

With small donations, the NPO will be able to work more days and employ more people.

The organisation was formed last year by Sue Retallack, Michael Blake and Kevin Mark.

They now clean the streets three times a week.

Sue said they work in Rhodes Park one of the days.

“We clear the pathways that have been overgrown with grass, pick up litter and generally tidy up,” she said.

The other two days the team works in the streets, sweeping, cutting back shoots of trees and picking up litter.

“We use weed killer on one area while working on another. We then wait for two weeks before coming back to do ‘skoffeling’. This way the weeds stay away longer and there is a lasting improvement.

“We work mostly on the main thoroughfares in Kensington, at Queen Street, Langerman Drive, Roberts Avenue, Cumberland Road, Marathon Street and so forth.

“We hope that with increased support from the residents, the team can increase the number of days they work and can also improve the smaller streets,” she said.

Sue said they have big dreams for the project and would love to see it grow so they can make an even bigger difference in Kensington.

“I hope that one day we can expand our area to include Bez Valley and Malvern to further prevent the encroaching degeneration of our suburb,” said Sue.

The NPO works closely with the City of Joburg, reporting missing manhole covers, storm water drain covers and collapsing sidewalks, burst water pipes, leaking water meters and leaking pipes.

“We also work closely with Pikitup to report and remove dumping, as well as the collection of bags generated by the Clean Village team twice a week,” she added.
