Motorbike hijackings are a reality
With hijacking statistics increasing each year, especially among cars, it’s important to be mindful that these automobiles aren’t the only targets.
There is no doubt that hijacking in our country is an unfortunate reality. However, it may come as a surprise to you that recent records have shown that motorcyclists can also be the victim of this type of crime, and need to be as cautious on the road as the drivers of cars.
A hijacking can happen in the blink of an eye. What’s even more alarming is that it’s very difficult to communicate with other drivers whilst wearing a helmet, or while your bike is running. This means that in a hijacking situation, bikers become more vulnerable to injury once they have removed their headgear.
Here’s what motorcyclists should know of the potential threat of a motorbike hijacking and how to be ready to respond accordingly:
- Motorbike hijackers travel on bikes too. Even when someone on a bike wants to chat with you, their intentions are not always good. Be conscious of motorcyclists with a pillion rider as they could assist their rider by pushing you off your bike. If that person starts to get off the bike, and there is an opportunity to safely pull off, do so immediately.
- If you suspect someone is following you, drive to the nearest well-lit public space, like a garage, and ensure you have an escape route every time you need to stop.
- Be cautious of people loitering around intersections. If possible, slow your speed to avoid coming to a complete stop.
Unfortunately, crime is a reality in South Africa, and although these tips can serve to make you more aware of the potential threat of a hijacking, having motorcycle insurance is a necessity.
So, remember to be vigilant on the road at all times, and even more so when you’re driving your bike at night.
