Mpact Recycling’s communications manager Donna Noble said, “Ronnie Recycler visits numerous schools throughout South Africa to spread the recycling message. We chose Troyeville Primary School today because we wanted to brighten the lives of children.”

Troyeville Primary has been recycling with Mpact since 2013.

Noble said the initiative teaches children the importance of protecting their planet. It highlights the role they can play individually or as a team by understanding recycling and waste separation.

“The initiative was developed by keeping children’s natures in mind. The programme was built on the principle of ‘Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may not remember, involve me and I’ll understand’,” explained Noble.

Mpact Recycling also partnered with Chicken Xpress to treat the children, teachers and volunteers to 1 000 meals sponsored by the food outlet.

Delon Biton, marketing manager for Chicken Xpress said, “The company’s goal is to become the ‘people’s champion’ in each new community we enter. Initiatives such as these are our way of making a difference in the communities we operate in and showing them how much we care.”

Troyeville Primary School is actively involved in recycling, with the learners bringing paper, cardboard boxes and milk and juice cartons from home to support its paper bank initiative.

Noble said the school principal is supportive of initiatives such as these, as are the teachers, and they have established a vegetable garden and a feeding scheme at the school.

For some learners, it’s their only meal of the day.

“We love supporting schools like Troyeville who take recycling seriously and also finds ways to support the needy. They are, after all, the future of South Africa and need to be equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to become active participants in our economy,” said Noble.

Recycling tips

• Reuse paper where you can to cover books or use as gift wrap.

• Recycle by starting the separation process at the source at your home, school or office.

• Get a separate reusable container or Ronnie bag for your paper waste.

• Separate your paper waste from your other waste by placing it in the container or bag.

• Keep your waste paper clean and dry as quality is important for a good end product.

• Expand your recycling efforts to include plastic and glass by using the same steps above.
