Illegal dumping in Malvern remains an eyesore and concern for residents.
According to ward councillor Neuren Pietersen, the dumping is out of control and some residents dump everywhere.
He said illegal dumping is a problem throughout the ward.
“It’s one of the issues I am trying to resolve. As they say, prevention is better than cure. The best way to prevent the dumping is by following the correct procedure for disposing of one’s rubbish, be it domestic refuse or building rubble,” he said.
He advised residents to apply for rubbish bins if they do not have one.
“The council provides a bin free of charge,” he said.
Some residents are concerned about the dumped rubble and rubbish because it affects their yards.
Residents stated even though Pikitup trucks collect rubbish every week, illegal dumping occurs every day.
Local business owners also complained about the dumping saying it affects their businesses.
When the EXPRESS visited corner 30th and Toronga streets, dumped rubbish was already blown around by the wind and was littering the entire street.
Bin policy
Pikitup implemented a new bin replacement policy.
A year ago, the city started implementing a monthly household waste management levy instead of a charge based on the number of bins on each property.
This means there is technically no limit on the number of bins a household can put out for collection.
There are four categories of bin replacements:
- • If you have no bin at your house because it is a new house or you have purchased the house and there was no bin, you can apply to Pikitup and get the bin for free.
- • If you want a second or more bins you pay R421.80 (R370 plus VAT) per bin.
- • If your bin has been stolen or gone missing, you can get one free bin replacement every eight years. After that you pay R421.80 per bin.
- • If your bin is broken or damaged, you will get a free bin, providing the old bin is returned.
In each of the above options residents need to call the CoJ call centre on 011 375 5555 and obtain a reference number.
You will need your account number when you do this.
If a bin has been stolen, the incident first needs to be reported at the nearest police station.
You will need to provide the case number when calling the call centre.
To pay for a bin, visit your nearest regional walk-in centre with the reference number, a copy of your municipal bill and R421.80 (R370 plus VAT) per bin. The office for Ward 118 is at Thuso House in Braamfontein.
Residents are reminded that building rubble can be dumped at Robinson Deep Landfill in Turffontein.
Garden refuse can be disposed of at the garden refuse site in Bez Valley.
If residents are aware of the dumping culprits they can report them to JMPD via Joburg Connect on 011 375 5911.
