“My one and only daughter was my inspiration. I could not let go of her when it was time to enrol her into a crèche.

“I recall leaving her there and she was crying and I stood outside crying of a broken heart of having to leave her behind. Eventually, I would hang around the crèche until she felt comfortable and while I was doing this the children started surrounding me and growing rather fond of me.

“The owner offered me a job and I gladly accepted as this was an ideal opportunity to be close to my daughter,” shared Shantelle.

Little did she know accepting the job just to be close to her daughter would bring her closer to her calling.

She said she knew after accepting that job there was no turning back and poured her heart into her work.

She worked three years in her daughter’s crèche.

She moved to Hillcrest Primary School seven years ago and is still teaching there.

Shantelle has been nominated for the “Excellence in Grade R teaching” award.

She was nominated by the head of department from the school and senior education specialist Rosemary Ndawonde from the Department of Education and Joburg East District for Early Childhood Development.

Shantelle said, “Nominations are based on one’s teaching methods and implementation together with the integration of the curriculum and its subjects. Teachers are assessed through observation during teaching and therefore an evaluation is made which leads to a nomination.”

Asked about the challenges she faces as a Grade R teacher and how she overcomes them, she said, “Like any other job, teaching has its challenges because you are dealing with children and you have to understand each and every one of them is different.

“I take challenges as learning opportunities and my drive is the importance of giving learners a proper education, especially in the foundation phase, so that they can build on it. Education and hard work is the key to success,” said Shantelle.

She said she loves working with the little ones and that her work has allowed her to use her creative side and bring about change one little step at a time.
