Music soothes the soul

12 year old Caitlin, who has Asperger's Syndrome, can play the piano, guitar and she sings.

Young musician Caitlin Rodgers is a talented girl with a passion for music.

Caitlin is sensitive to sudden noises that are out of rhythm, such as a car hooter or a barking dog.

Since taking up music under Edenvale music teacher, Mijaelle Dewart, two and a half years ago things got better for Caitlin.

“I love music. When my ears get sore I put my earphones on and it helps me and calms me down,” said Caitlin

She enjoys singing and piano the most as her hands get sore when she plays the guitar.

She discovered her passion for music as the age of three.

“I was in my room and I just started singing to Demi Lovato,” said Caitlin.

Her favourite artists are Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Demi Lovato.

Caitlin said she can relate to their songs and hopes to one day become a rock star.

Despite discovering her love for music at an early age, Caitlin’s confidence took a knock when she was not allowed to perform in a talent show when she was in Grade Three.

“My friends entered the school’s talent show and they asked me to join them because they liked my singing. A teacher said I couldn’t be in the show because I was not attending singing lessons,” said Caitlin.

With encouragement from other teachers her confidence grew.

To grow her students’ confidence Dewart will host a private concert for her students’ parents.

The concert will be held at the Edenvale Community Centre in October.

“Because this is the first concert for some of my students I didn’t feel that it was right to have it open to the public,” said Dewart.

At the concert Dewart’s students will be entertained by professional musicians such as Phil Holder (a saxophonist), Mike Meiring of Highway Jam and Adrian Ziller (a guitarist).

Caitlin will sing and play the piano at the concert and her performances will include Avril Lavigne’s Skaterboy and her own version of Katy Perry’s Firework.
