Rand Tutorial College’s science debating team will represent Gauteng in the national finals on October 6.
The school has been selected from Gauteng’s top ten schools which contested the provincial round of the annual National Schools Debates Competition held by the South African Agency for Science and Development (SAASTA).
Crawford College Pretoria finished in second place and Mondeor High School was placed third.
The science debating programme seeks to foster the confidence and capability for high school learners to speak about science.
Manager of Science Communication for SAASTA, Michael Ellis, said the National Schools Debates Competition is a unique and valuable platform where young minds have an opportunity to debate interesting scientific questions.
“In the process, they learn about the incredible science that is being done in South Africa,” he said.
“The competition aims to stimulate interest among high school learners between Grades Nine to 11 to study towards careers in the fields of science, engineering and technology. It also develops critical thinking skills by debating on various scientific topics.”
