City of Joburg’s MMC for environment and infrastructure, Clr Nico de Jager, said City Power is conducting several street light installation and maintenance projects across Joburg.

“In light of the R19-billion City Power infrastructure backlog, which includes a street light refurbishment and maintenance backlog amounting to R1.2-billion, I am pleased with the work being done by City Power,” said de Jager.

He said the entity is facing a massive backlog, and a total overhaul of the city’s infrastructure is required.
He said while new street lights are being installed, City Power is also undertaking maintenance of the over 270 000 existing street lights across Joburg.
“As part of this undertaking, street lights are also being inspected twice a week along all major routes to establish any defects. The turn-around time for fixing these lights is seven days.
“All minor routes are also being inspected once every quarter and repaired within 14 days,” said de Jager.
Maintenance of street lights conducted throughout the city includes replacement of covers, lamps and photo cells and straightening of poles.
“The city is in need of additional capital funding to be able to replace all street lights, and not just a pole-by-pole replacement as maintenance requires. However, in an effort to be proactive, a dedicated general manager who is solely responsible for the maintenance and repair of street lights has been appointed.”
