Illegal dumping is an offence and it is illegal to dump waste on any vacant land, open veld or public space.
Ward 32 Clr Bongani Nkomo expressed his concerns about building rubble dumped along Peace Street and Old Johannesburg Road in Modderfontein.
“After some discussions with residents with regards to illegal dumping on the corner of Peace and Johannesburg Road, it has come to my attention that the trucks dumping are contracted to a company or developer doing construction. This is, however, an allegation and a suspicion at this point,” said Nkomo.

He said the illegal dumping was a cause for concern and all the stakeholders would have to come up with ways of dealing with the issue before it spirals out of control.
“The area can be closed off to stop the trucks from gaining entry. Cameras can also be put up in order to catch those who continue to dump so they can be prosecuted,” he said.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said if anyone is caught their vehicle will be impounded and they will get a fine of R1 500 for contravening the City of Johannesburg by-laws as well as a R2 850 impounding fee.
