Hall gets much needed revamp

The Bedfordview City Hall is temporarily closed due to renovations that are taking place.

The Bedfordview City Hall is temporarily closed due to renovations that are due to take place soon.

The renovations include fixing floors, water leaks, painting, steps and the fire-escape.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said the renovations were welcomed because the hall’s infrastructure had deteriorated over the years.

“The renovations were supposed to start in early March and finish by end of April but there have been some delays. It is important for the work to finish as soon as possible because the hall is very busy with community events, therefore it cannot be closed for long,” said Humphreys.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys said the renovations were welcomed because the hall’s infrastructure had deteriorated over the years.

She said she was happy with the way the hall was maintained and the renovations will add to that.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe confirmed that the renovations were supposed to have started already

“However, the City of Ekurhuleni is using learnership contractors for job creation and skills development,” he said.

“This has led to delays due to among others, occupational health and safety files (OHS). We are, however, ready to start anytime, most probably this week,” said Gadebe.

Gadebe said the City has instructed the contractor to make use of local labour wherever possible and as part of their contract with the City of Ekurhuleni they are required to do so.

“To this end, we have asked the councillor through her ward committee to provide the requisite names and contact details to the contractor of possible local labour,” said Gadebe.

He said the project will cost just less than R800 000.

He urged community members who want to make use of the hall to use the Germiston City Hall until the renovations are complete.
