During the clean-up, contractors from the power station cleared rubbish and debris from the wetland and its tributaries.

Garry Thomas, a member of the Illiondale Wetland Buddies group, points to some of the rubbish and debris removed from the area surrounding the Illiondale Wetland.

The clean-up was held at the beginning of April.

Some of the items removed from the tributaries included plastic, wood, beds, car bumpers and oil-filled containers.

Garry Thomas, a member of the Illiondale Wetland Buddies Group, said the assistance from Kelvin was greatly appreciated.

“Contractors from Kelvin have assisted not only the community, but also the Illiondale Wetland Buddies Group,” said Garry.

Since the group was founded in 2012 it has attempted to keep the wetland clean and preserve it for future generations.

The wetland clean-up operations were initiated by the community in 2013.

Garry said community members involved in the group are passionate about looking after the environment.

Since the group was established it has formed good relationships with local businesses and the City of Ekurhuleni.

Whenever Garry needs to analyse one of the tributaries for problems, the businesses cooperate with him.

If Garry does find a problem near the wetland, he reports it to the municipality, who assist and rectify the problem.

According to Garry the biggest problems for the wetland are illegal dumping and sewage flowing into it.

“As community members, we need to get involved and look after our environment,” he said.
