Bertrams Junior School celebrates their birthday too on July 18

“We are proud to share the day with Madiba.”

As the country will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela on July 18, so will Bertrams Junior School.

The school was built in 1917.

It opened its doors to learners on July 18, 1918.

“We are proud to share the day with Madiba. The man has done a lot for the country and his work touched many lives. As a school we live for our learners through education,” said principal Khanyi Twala.

She said as the school celebrates 100 years they want to use this opportunity to create awareness about the school.

“We are growing as a school and we need donations so we will be raising funds to address some of the challenges we have as a school. We want good learning facilities for our children,” said Twala.

The learners took some time to draw pictures of Nelson Mandela to show what the day and late former president means to them.

Poems were also written which learners will share on the day of the celebration.

The country will celebrate the struggle icon under the theme ‘Be the Legacy’.

A portrait of Nelson Mandela hangs in the Bertrams Junior School’s hallway.

Poem by Ryan Ncunuka

Nelson Mandela that is your name.

You are our hero with so much fame.

You fought so tirelessly for your people’s freedom.

And you had a lot of wisdom.

You sacrificed your family for us.

You had so much love for your country.

You knew your imprisonment and hard labour will set us free.

Your children and us had so much love for you that you didn’t see.

Your face brought so much hope to our people.

Your memories will always be alive in our hearts.

Your words will always echo in our ears

You might be gone but you will never be forgotten.

Thank you, Mandela.
