#EverydayHero: Khadua donates his 300th unit of blood

Satish Khadua (75) donated his 300th unit of blood at the Bruma Blood Donor Centre recently.

He started donating blood in KwaZulu-Natal in September 1965 and made his most recent blood donation on September 24.
He clearly remembers the day he made his first donation when a mobile unit in Durban visited the company where he worked.
“I found that it was most convenient as I did not have to go out to look for a donor centre.

“I also encouraged companies to get on board and host South African National Blood Service (SANBS) at their companies to urge non-donors to become donors when they see their colleagues supporting the blood drive,” he said.
Khadua is delighted at saving the lives of the many patients who receive blood on a daily basis.
He said 300 units is not the end.
“I want to continue doing this unselfish service to the community. I am grateful for reaching this milestone of 300th donations. I kept myself in great shape by going to the gym first then going into the Bruma Donor Centre to donate blood,” he said.
At 75 he encouraged people of all walks of life to donate blood on a regular basis.
“It is the one way anyone, regardless of their status in their community, can make a difference in the lives of the people who require blood transfusions every day.
“I want to express my appreciation to the staff at the Bruma Centre for their dedication and hard work.
“They have always been friendly, courteous, competent and appreciative. It has been a pleasure donating each time. It is satisfying to have been able to make meaningful blood donations over the years that have saved many lives,” he said.
“We salute Khadua for being part of the blood donation family. We wish him every success and great health,” said public relations practitioner at SANBS, Sini Subrayen.
