Richard lives with his wife, Lyn Wadley, who is a professor of archaeology at Wits, on a small game farm on the Waterberg plateau in Limpopo Province.
Since moving to the Waterberg in 2005, Richard has been involved in one or other capacity with several local community organisations.
For three years he chaired the Waterberg Nature Conservancy and has been involved in the local fire protection association and agricultural union.
For five years he chaired the board of a small, but excellent independent school in Vaalwater.
At the same time, he began to gather material for his growing interest in the history of the region, much of which had never been formally or accurately documented.
