#BlackFriday is here but remember to keep safe

The Black Friday shopping bonanza has proven to be popular with many residents in the City of Johannesburg seeking bargains and a bit of retail therapy.

Black Friday is here and retailers and shoppers are ready for big sales.

While Black Friday provides a great opportunity for shoppers to get discounted deals on goods, the day has also brought about many safety challenges.

In the past, the City’s Department of Public Safety had its hands full dealing with Black Friday shopping-related incidences such as stampeding, lost children, damage to property, assault, and even theft and robbery.

Public Safety MMC Michael Sun says, “We want our residents and visitors to enjoy the shopping experience in the City safely and offer some safety tips in getting ready for the great shopping on Black Friday:

• Take care of your children and don’t let them wander off on their own.

• Take care of your belongings, don’t leave your valuables, such as bags and phones, unattended.

• Go cashless, use bank cards when paying.

• Be alert when drawing cash at an ATM, don’t expose your cash.

• Ensure that your car, windows and trunk are properly locked/closed.

• Be patient and courteous to fellow shoppers and road users.

“Remember, shopping is not more important than you and your family.

“We also urge the retailers and shopping centres management to step up security measures and ensure that shoppers are assisted during cases of emergencies,” added Sun.

The City’s Emergency Management Services, JMPD and the Disaster Management Centre will be on high alert and on standby to assist residents where needed.
