WATCH: Eastleigh pianist has a passion to perform
“I can’t explain my attraction to music. There is just something about it that I love.”
His determination to showcase his musical talents to the NEWS in an audition, resulted in a sit down with Eastleigh resident Mervyn Miller (78) recently.

Mervyn, a former professional musician has a passion for performing and keeping community members entertained.
This pianist is a member of a duet which performs and entertains residents at retirement homes.

Mervyn and his musical partner Eileen Wainer play and sing a variety of music ranging from Italian, Latin, the blues, rock n roll, Afrikaans and the waltz.
While in his teens Mervyn discovered his passion and interest in music.

“My late sister used to play classical music. Something about the music just settled in my mind,” said Mervyn.
“I bought myself a chord chart and started learning music from there. Once I had an understanding I taught myself how to play the guitar. While in the navy he entertained others by playing the trumpet.

“A few years later a friend of mine asked me to sing in a band with her.”
However, as Mervyn grew older and his family started to grow he decided to give up his musical career and focus on his family.
“I still played music but I would play for my family and keep them entertained.”
“I can’t explain my attraction to music. There is just something about it that I love.”
Mervyn said when he and Eileen play at old age homes the residents respond well to the music.

“We get everyone dancing and on their feet. It’s wonderful to see.”
Mervyn explained that although the pair charges a fee to perform they do not make money out of the performances.
He said the fee charged is to cover the petrol expenses of him and Eileen.
“We enjoy playing music. We are not doing this to make money.”
In addition to playing for old age home residents Mervyn still actively sings at his synagogue.
