Barbi demonstrates water painting
Barbi Vanderwalle grew up on a tobacco farm in Malawi and is inspired by open spaces.
The Paint & Palette Group met on January 19 at the Edenvale Community Centre to see a demonstration by artist Barbi Vanderwalle.

She did a watercolour painting demonstration.
Moira Simonson, demonstration coordinator, said that Vanderwalle recently came in second in the acclaimed International Watercolour Competition, a really prestigious award.

“Vanderwalle demonstrated her technique of negative painting and sandpaper to achieve the effect of sea spray breaking over rocks.
Watercolour painting is a very delicate medium so to attack the paper with sandpaper is extremely unusual and quite a shock to most water colourists, but the group were all enthusiastic to give it a try,” said Simonson.
