Anxiety is one of the obstacles matric learners have to deal with in their final year of schooling.
They have to prepare for final exams, balance life outside of school and answer the daunting question everybody asks: “what are you doing next year?”.
The NEWS caught up with Holy Rosary School for Girls’ head girl, Kekeletso Masenya.
The 17-year-old learner told the NEWS how she copes with her matric anxiety and the uncertainty of the future.

“I learned how to overcome anxiety at the beginning of Grade 11 when I was elected as a leader.”
Kekeletso has a lot of responsibilities; she juggles sports, academics and her head girl duties outside of home.
“I’m involved in public speaking, netball, community service, hospitality, public relations and I like jogging.
“As head girl, I also speak at school events. Additionally, I help with marketing for the school by going to open days, primary schools and information evenings.”

She said when she feels anxious about matric and all the responsibilities that come with it she starts to plan.
“My anxiety is eased by planning ahead.
“I have a monthly calendar, diary and reminders of things I have to do,” said Kekeletso.
She said she watches cartoons to relax.
“I enjoy The Amazing World of Gumball, it makes life seem simple for a moment and then I return to the busyness.”
Kekeletso said she tries not to focus on the uncertainty of the future.

“I’d much rather focus on what I can work towards now.”
Kekeletso wants to further her studies in medicine or law.
She job-shadowed at a hospital to see where she could possibly specialise in for her medical career.
Her advice to fellow matriculants is to know themselves and not procrastinate.
“My advice to other matriculants is to do their work in time and not leave it for later.
“Find out more about yourself and about what helps you calm your anxiety.
“Have some personal time to relax,” said Kekeletso.
