Social seniors gather at community centre

"While at home I realised the importance of interacting with other people and started looking for a social group."

Senior citizens may feel alone or isolated from the community if they do not have the opportunity to interact with others.

Edenvale Senior Citizens Society (ESCS) hopes to change this by encouraging the elderly to interact with one another at the Edenvale Community Centre.

The society hosts daily activities, including yoga, art classes, concerts, seniors gym and table tennis.

ESCS office manager Maureen Croston has been a member of the society for 10 years.

“I worked for many years, so when I retired I wasn’t doing much,” said Maureen.

“While at home I realised the importance of interacting with other people and started looking for a social group.”

Maureen said in some instances elderly community members get to a point where they do not want to interact with anyone and withdraw from society.

“What I enjoy most about the society is the people and the fact that I am still an active member of the community.”

The annual membership fee of the society is R145, although activities at the centre cost extra.

Community members can also buy daily lunches from the society and attend the numerous events which the society hosts throughout the year.

Some upcoming events include:

• St Patrick’s Day on March 19.

• A build-a-burger day on March 29.

Contact 011 453 7608 for more information. Anyone over the age of 50 can join the society.
