Little Eden to expand charity shop

The shop will move to bigger premises and include two shops in one.

From March 1 onwards Little Eden Second-hand Shop will change its name to Little Eden Society Charity Shop and operate from a new location.

The new and improved shop will be at De Sun Place on 33 Eighth Avenue in Edenvale.

Public relations and communications officer, Nichollette Muthige, said the relocation will occur to allow the shop to cater for its shoppers.

“The shop has identified two distinct market groups; the retail shopper buying for personal use and the small business operator buying for reselling to customers in their communities.”

“The new bigger premises will cater to both markets as it has two shops located side by side.”

Since it was established the society has relied on the generous donations from its supporters.

Priority is given to the homes for any donations received although not all donations in kind are suitable for use by the residents.

Because of this, the society established the shop to generate income through sales of the second-hand items

Approximately eight per cent of the society’s income comes from shop operations.

This contributes to the R45-million needed for the current financial period.

The society cares for 300 children and adults with profound intellectual disabilities.

Nichollette said the majority of the society’s residents were abandoned while others come from indigent families who are unable to support them financially.

“The shop is a sustainable project for Little Eden although its impact goes far beyond its walls helping to support small business owners and their families.”

Second-hand items in a good condition can be donated at 79 Wagenaar Road.
