The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) responded to Edenvale resident Rory Gilfillan’s complaint on being declined the installation of a smart meter.

Themba Gadebe, CoE spokesperson, said CoE has 312 000 prepayment meters and a further 95 000 conventional (manually read) residential and small business meters.
“Approximately 40 per cent of these meters are on CoE Tariff B, which caters for higher unit consuming customers.
“The average consumption, over 12 months, of these higher consuming customers are approximately 700 units per month,” said Gadebe.
He said smart metering, as per the definition of the 2008 Regulation, is not available to CoE customers.
Gadebe added the cost of a smart meter will be the cost quoted by bidders, once an open procurement process is followed and, of course, that cost will be in response to the level of specification that is published.
“When the city takes a resolution to move to smart metering, residents will be accordingly informed,” said Gadebe.
