Indlulamithi project ready to start in Joburg East
The project will be located in two wards, Ward 66 and Ward 67.
After months of planning and sharing of ideas the Indlulamithi project is in the final stages and Joburg Development Agency (JDA) is ready to get the project off the ground.
A public meeting was held on May 28 at Observatory Girls Primary School where the JDA met with the community to share the project’s scope of work and its requirements.
The construction work was planned to commence on June 4 and will conclude in October. JDA said they aim for the project to take four months.
The project will be located in two wards, Ward 66 and Ward 67.

Work will be conducted in the areas near the United Church Schools, Yeoville Boys Primary School, Yeoville Community School, Bellevue Park, and the corner of Muller and Bezuidenhout and Bezuidenhout and De La Rey intersections.
Some of the scope of work includes ramps for the disabled, replacement of broken kerb inlet covers and cleaning of existing storm water pipes.

The project will cost R6.5-million.
JDA said the project will appoint one community liaison officer (CLO) for both wards, 12 general workers who will be sourced from the two wards and two SMME’s will be employed for the project.
Residents raised concerns regarding the project.
They were concerned about the number of general workers who will be employed, two wards sharing one CLO and the number of SMME’s that will be employed for the project.
A request was made by the community for the number of general workers to be increased from 12 to 15.
Residents also requested the number of SMME’s be increased to at least two and for each ward to have its own CLO.
JDA said the numbers for general workers and SMME’s were determined to ensure everyone involved is reasonably paid and make profit.
Ward 66 Councillor Carlos Da Rocha said he is excited about the project because it will benefit the schools and the area itself.
“‘Our Street, Our Block’ project is an initiative that was started by Sacred Heart Collage, Observatory Girls Primary and other schools in the Yeoville area, in partnership with JDA. I’m happy that Indlulamithi was chosen,” said Da Rocha.
“This project will turn Muller Street in Bellevue and Yeoville into a child-friendly street with various themes and activities which will benefit the children. Safety is important for the children because the area has high crime rates,” said Da Rocha.
“This project is good for the ward because it brings positive change. There will be an upgrade of infrastructure and the most important thing is it will create local job opportunities. I’m happy some of my residents will benefit from the project as they will be getting employed,” said Da Rocha.
