Sacred Heart’s debate team wins championship

Sacred Heart has made its mark in the previous years' competitions.

Sacred Heart College’s debate team came first place at the provincial Absa Ready To Work Debating Championships.

The team went through to the nationals where they competed from June 14 to 16.

Debater Tariro Banganayi said he was excited about the win and was confident about the nationals.

“I’m proud of the team. We have worked really hard to make sure we win at the provincial round.

“We are happy that our dedication has paid off,” said Banganayi.

“The national platform offers more diversity. We met other debaters from other provinces and had the chance to hear how they present their arguments,” said Tanyaradza Kaseke.

“It offered an opportunity to learn from others.”

Sacred Heart has made its mark in the previous years’ competitions.

The team said they are grateful for their teacher for making sure they become a strong team.

“Last year was not a great year for the team. We won individual competitions, but not as a team.

“The provincial win means a lot for us because it shows how as a team we have worked hard and grown.

“We now understand each other and understand we all have different things to contribute to the team and it is important to know each other’s strengths,” said Siyabonga Nxumalo.

“Our school is one of the most diverse schools. That has allowed us the opportunity to get views and ideas from different people. We can discuss vast topics and be able to delivery all sides of the story. It’s important for your argument to have substance,” said Tyron Wei.
