Thembalami’s new care centre manager is a natural caregiver
Esme spent some time working abroad, but returned to care for her father when he got very ill.
Caregiver Esme van der Walt has become the new Thembalami Care Centre manager recently.
She joined the Rand Aid Association at the beginning of May this year.
Esme expressed how impressed she was with the large gardens of the care centre and its focus on the Eden Alternative philosophy.
One of her first priorities will be steering the centre towards Eden Alternative registration.
She believes working with older people is her calling.
“I want elders to be respected, loved, cared for and given their rightful place in society,” she said.
“Elders need to be acknowledged for their immense knowledge, the richness of their past and the value they bring to society.
“They should be viewed as individuals with their own likes, dislikes and interests rather than as residents or patients,” said Esme.
Having witnessed the failing health of her parents, she said she has great empathy not only for the elders who live at Thembalami, but also their family members.
