Case of murder and business robbery under investigation

“When the security officer arrived, he was shot from behind by a suspect near one of the centre's entrances.”

A security officer died after he was shot at Park Meadows Shopping Centre when a group of men robbed HiFi corporation.

The group, believed to more than eight-strong, took an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones from the store on Wednesday morning.

Cleveland SAPS spokesperson Capt Johan Jordaan said the security officer from National Security responded to the scene after a panic button was activated.

“When the security officer arrived, he was shot from behind by a suspect near one of the centre’s entrances,” said Jordaan.

“The officer ran inside the centre and shot back at the suspect.”

Police believe the other suspects fled the centre after hearing the gunshots.

Jordaan said the security officer died as a result of his injuries.

“He was shot approximately three times. Video footage showed that three suspects were wounded by the security officer.”

Following the incident, a case of murder and business robbery were opened and are being investigated by the SAPS.
