Colourful 100-year celebration for Jeppe Girls

It was a day filled with fun, music, food and colours. The girls and staff enjoyed themselves in different activities throughout the day.

It was all fun and celebration on July 30 at Jeppe High School for Girls as the school turned 100 years old.

The day started with a breakfast followed by assembly when the girls celebrated with music.

The celebrations moved to the sports field for inter-house athletics, ending the day with a colour fest.

Learners were also invited to design a logo for the centenary celebration.

The winning logo was desgined by Swayde Lessing.

The logo will be used on all the marketing material for the celebration year.

Swayde received a cash prize and was also awarded a special tracksuit top in assembly by headmistress Dina Gonçalves, which displays the logo.

The assembly activities were made extra special with the attendance of three former learners – Lauren Berrington (head girl 1997), Boitumelo Loate (head girl 2006) and Rophiwa Madzena (class of 2010).

“I’m proud to be part this special occasion. This is my home and being here today brings back memories. As a Jeppe girl, I remember how the school allowed us to explore different things and find out what we love,” said Loate.

Jeppe Girls was established in 1890 when it was founded along with the boys’ school as a single private Anglican school under the name St Michael’s College.

The school closed during the Anglo Boer War and the girls split from the boys’ school at the beginning of 1919.

They were housed temporarily for the first six months of the year at Fairview Primary School and then later moved to their current school premises.

The school now boasts in excess of 930 learners and is rated as one of the top public schools in Gauteng.

The school encompasses many fine traditions and has seen many outstanding young women journey through its classrooms and sports fields and go on to serve and lead in their fields.

The school is known for its diversity as over the years it had met the challenges of a changing community and has embraced change.
