Joburg Photowalkers celebrates 10th anniversary in Queen Street

The challenge started last year and photowalkers visited different suburbs in Johannesburg, including Auckland Park, Albertsville, Bertrams, Braamfontein and Cyrildene.

Joburg Photowalkers graced Queen Street with their photography skills on August 31 as part of the group’s Alphabet Photography Challenge.

The group has now reached the letter “Q” and decided to cover Queen Street.

“The visit to Queen Street was a good choice, with all the photographers finding lots to capture. Plus, the hospitality of the shop owners and people along the street made for an awesome morning outing,” said member of Joburg Photowalkers Gail Wilson.

Joburg Photowalkers was started by Mark Straw and his friends in 2009 as a means to walk around capturing places and people of the city.

The Photowalkers just celebrated their 10th anniversary.

“The group has grown over the years. The membership currently stands at 3 500. We have regular events happening, such as the Alphabet Photography Challenge, amongst others,” said Wilson.

The group offers members the opportunity to explore places that are not open to the public.

“Mark has had major achievements over the years. He has managed to get us into places not generally open to the public and arranged many early-morning sunrise events as well as sunsets on most of our ridges in Johannesburg,” said Wilson.

She said the group was well received in Queen Street and had an interesting experience.

“On behalf of Joburg Photowalkers we would like to thank all those wonderful people in Queen Street who opened their businesses to us and allowed us to venture in and take photographs,” said Wilson.
