Belgravia poet nominated for SATMA Award
“My poetry is inspired by my mother and my upbringing because those two things made me the woman I am today.”
Belgravia resident Noxolo ‘Nox Gold’ Mazibuko is using her poetry to tell her story and heal souls.
“Through my poetry, I am able to express pain and love, but most importantly, to tell my story.
“My poetry is inspired by my mother and my upbringing because those two things made me the woman I am today,” said Nox Gold.

Born in KwaZulu-Natal but raised in Mpumalanga, Nox Gold said her cultural diversity and church influenced her life.
“My parents always said with education you will never suffer, especially if you have maths and science and that stream led me to the engineering world. It was not my first love because my artistic soul wanted to do something else, but I took that opportunity of working in a male-dominated industry. It was an opportunity to learn what my father did as he worked in the mines,” said Nox Gold.
In 2013 she decided to pursue her first love, music and the arts and came to Joburg.
“When I decided to leave work and come to Joburg and pursue my first love I did not know what Joburg had in store for me. I was 14 when I started writing poetry and music,” said Nox Gold, who also manages artists and writes music for other artists.
She said when she writes her poetry and music, she always reflects on her mother’s and the church’s teachings.
She said through her poetry, she wants to celebrate women, inspire the youth and also give hope.
“A lot is happening in our country and it’s heartbreaking. People need to reflect on the pain they inflict on each other and how it will impact the next generation,” said Nox Gold.
The poet has just been nominated for a SATMA Award (South African Traditional Music Achievement) Awards and said for her as a poet, it served as an acknowledgment of her work.
She has been nominated for a poem titled ‘Metaphors to the African Child’.
The SATMA’s were founded in 2006 and are the largest traditional music awards in Africa, celebrating indigenous music, culture and heritage.
Currently, the SATMA Awards phenomenon is also the only one of its kind in Africa, where the core objective is to empower local traditional musicians, artists and groups, to celebrate their indigenous music, and to preserve and regenerate African heritage and culture across Africa.
