Phase 2 of Horwood upgrades to start soon

“A lot of Edenvale residents spent time in the park as children and now they can bring their children to the park.”

As the year draws to a close, phase one of two of the upgrades to Horwoods’ Farm is nearing completion.

The work done to the southern side of the park, closest to Horwood Street, includes several upgrades such as:

• An upgraded and improved parking area.

• An area dedicated to market-related events.

• A new skateboarding park.

• A multi-purpose court.

• Improved pathways.

• An improved amphitheatre.

Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart said phase two of the upgrades is due to start in the next few weeks and will begin with the erection of a clear view fence around the park.

“The new fence will be erected around the perimeter of the whole park.

“Phase one is almost complete and the contractors are just working on the final touches.”

Hart believes the new fencing will improve security at the park.

“Once the new fence is up, the park will be locked at 6 pm, and anyone found inside once it is closed, will be treated as a trespasser and will be removed.”

Hart said some of the upgrades which will be done during phase two include the installation of an outside gym, the renovation and modernisation of the play area.

Other upgrades include the renovation and repositioning of the stall structure, a new guardhouse and additional ablution block, new braai facilities and the addition of dustbins and park furniture.

“I am looking forward to the completion of the upgrades. I believe the park is going to be great. ”

Ward 18 committee member Margy Pedder, who is also the head of the ward’ environmental portfolio, said she too looks forward to the upgrades.

“A lot of Edenvale residents spent time in the park as children, and now can bring their children to the park.”

Hart said although changes will be made, it will largely remain the same and stay true to its roots.

Charlene Jacobson, an organiser of the Horwoods Farm Family Market, said she is looking forward to the completion of the upgrades.

“It’s very exciting, once everything is completed I’m sure community members will visit the park even when there is no market.”

Hart expects the park’s upgrades to be completed in the next six months.
