Kensington’s social affair
In October, the club started with programmes which include a six-week dog training course, a four-week course on yoga for beginners, weekly boot camp exercises and a music jam session.
Former industrial psychologist Louise Holman (66), from Kensington, is the founder of Kensington Social Club that offers affordable short courses and get-togethers.
She has been living in Kensington for almost 32 years and she values those around her with special knowledge and skills which they can share with others in the community.
“When I started the club, the first step was to obtain buy-in from the premises to be used which was the Kensington Club on Ivanhoe Street and the support of the Kensington Resident’s Ratepayers Association. People were assigned to help me and I’m pleased to say that residents are attending every event now.”

In October, the club started with programmes, which include a six-week dog training course, a four-week course on yoga for beginners, weekly boot camp exercises and a music jam session.
“We cater for all. It doesn’t matter what age you are because we are focused on people learning and enjoying practical skills and social ways.
“We have the monthly sewing and knitting group where they meet with others who have the same interest in knitting and we show them how to begin,” said Holman.
The monthly family sporting days allow parents to play sports with their children instead of just watching them.

Holman said the November programme is already jam-packed and includes a four-week course in conversational isiZulu, a three-session course about the birds of Kensington, boxing for beginners and a family volleyball afternoon.
“We cannot wait to start the session with our Zulu tutor,” said Holman.
“I remember I was on a long-distance train with a lady who didn’t understand English. We wanted to talk, but we couldn’t because of the language difference. For the session, we decided on the most used language, which is IsiZulu.”
In December teenagers can take part in the “make your own” short courses and these will include art, carpentry and embroidery.
