Sacred Heart alumni celebrate 95 years at current location

Head of the school Heather Blanckensee said the school is 130 years old and is one of the oldest schools in Johannesburg.

Sacred Heart College celebrated 95 years at its property in Observatory and reunited with its alumni on November 29.

Head of the school Heather Blanckensee said the school is 130 years old and is one of the oldest schools in Johannesburg.

“This is our 95th year in Observatory after we expanded to include girls in 1980. Previously, the school was only for boys.

“In 1977, we opened our doors to black learners and later to Chinese learners to become a non-racial school.

“We have some significant alumni, including the likes of Sim Tshabalala, who is the CEO of Standard Bank.”

Blanckensee said the main focus of the event was just to invite former learners to join in celebrating 95 years at its current campus.

“The purpose of the event is to say to our alumni we recognise who they are and that they play an important role at the school.

“We also encourage them to form a partnership with the school for learners who actually look up to them. I believe it is important for them to be part of the school in assisting learners with career guidance,” she said.
