CoE to release several strategic land parcels

“This programme intends to improve food security and attract investments into the city.”

In 2019 the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) started the release of over 40 strategic land parcels (SLP) for large-scale development in the city region.

Executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina said the city is still in the process of releasing some of these parcels.

In addition to the 40 SLPs for large-scale development, the city is also releasing 56 farms to local subsistence farmers at a value of R120-million.

This was announced during the mayor’s speech at the final sitting of CoE’s council on November 28 at Germiston Council Chambers.

Masina said the land question in South Africa is directly tied to the agrarian question.

“As such, this programme intends to improve food security and attract investments into the city.”

Masina said cemeteries were an important portion of the SLPs.

He explained that CoE’s real estate department had identified a land parcel of the size required for a cemetery.

“This land is required for a cemetery to replace the 150 hectares that were released for the Tambo Springs Inland Port.

“No less than 50 per cent of the land will be retained at City of Ekurhuleni tariffs.”

Masina said the rest of the land will incorporate a mixed-use typology of complementary uses, such as a crematorium, mausoleums and coffin manufacturing.
