The Edenvale Branch of SA Woman’s Institute ended 2019 with a smile when the institute held an end-of-year function for its members.

Founded 63 years ago, the institute plays an important part in the lives of its members by providing demonstrations and entertainment.

Maureen Scholfield, chairperson of the Edenvale branch, said the institute has between 45 and 50 members who attend the monthly meetings.

She said some of the members have been with the institute for more than 25 years.

In the early 1970s, the institute made its home at the Edenvale Bowling Club.

“We have been at this first-class venue for 47 years for which we are very thankful.”

Members of the Edenvale branch of SA Woman’s Institute enjoy the 2019 year-end function held at Edenvale Bowling Club in December 2019.

For the past 24 years, Maureen has been chairperson, together with Ann Harrison as treasurer and Audrey Giovannani as a kitchen elf.

Maureen said in the ’70s, membership was R2 per annum, 20c for tea and cake and 10c for a raffle ticket which helped raise funds for the institute’s charities.

Charities which benefit from the fundraising include, Little Eden, Edenhaven Retirement Village, Edenvale SPCA and Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.

“The Woman’s Institute played a large part of the Rand Easter Show, cooking up a storm in the Home Industry Hall before the venue was changed,” said Maureen.

She said in previous years, there were branches from Nigel to Krugersdorp, but, over the years, many closed.

Maureen said Edenvale and Brakpan are the only branches still open.
