Little Eden to host intellectual disabilities awareness campaign
One hundred and eighty-nine (63 per cent) of the society's residents rely on wheelchairs for all their mobility needs.
Kaya FM and SA Paralympic rower Sandra Khumalo will join forces with Little Eden Society to shine a light on immobility challenges faced by individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities.
The partnership hopes to generate greater awareness through the society’s third annual Little Eden Society’s CEO Wheelchair Campaign™.
The campaign will start on March 2.
Because March is National Intellectual Disability month, the society challenges CEOs of companies to spend one day at work in a wheelchair.
By spending time in a wheelchair, the society hopes CEOs will spread awareness about disability and raise much-needed funds for the society.
Funds raised will go towards covering the costs of caring for 300 children and adults with intellectual disability at the society.
Of the 300 residents at the home, 70.7 per cent have been abandoned, while others are from indigent families who are not able to support them financially
One hundred and eighty-nine (63 per cent) of the society’s residents rely on wheelchairs for all their mobility needs.
They have to be bathed, fed and dressed by their carers, as they are unable to do anything for themselves.
Due to their level of mental functioning, they do not qualify to attend special needs schools, so the society does not receive much corporate social investment (CSI) funding.
