The Founders Day Service celebrated 118 years of St Andrew’s School for Girls and 30 years of the Saturday school programme, uBambiswano, on January 22.
Ivanka Acquisto, the school’s executive head, said the school was established by pioneering women in 1901 with only 19 learners.

St Andrew’s School for Girls joined by learners, staff and guests for Founders Day Service.
Today it boasts 1 000 learners.
A sermon by Right Reverend Dr Steve Moreo, Bishop of Johannesburg, formed part of the day’s programme.

The staff choir welcomed learners and everybody else at the service in song and dance to celebrate 118 years of the school’s existence.
The school also honoured the 30th anniversary of uBambiswano and gave thanks to those who have been instrumental in driving the programme.

A presentation on ‘thirty birthday blessings’ was also done by staff, alumni and learners of uBambiswano.

“When you turn 30 you find yourself at a place of growth. We will approach uBambiswano with this mindset. We want to continue building and set new goals for the programme,” said new head of uBambiswano Siphiwe Vilakazi.

Sandi McCallum from uBambiswano also reflected on 30 years of the programme.
“We started the programme with prepared lessons and enrichment programmes. We need to make sure we help people out of poverty. We cannot have our young not have food or an education,” said McCallum.
