Edenvale Hospice in need of funds for generator

"Since July we have had to turn two patients with lung cancer away. The tuberculosis patients are also battling to breathe."

With the start of winter only a few months away and the threat of load shedding looming, Edenvale Care Centre Hospice has appealed for assistance.

Sister Leigh of the centre appealed to the community for funds to help them repair its generator.

The generator provides electricity to oxygen machines, the laundry and kitchen during load shedding or power outages.

Leigh said the generator, which the Hospice has had for four years, stopped working last year.

A quote she obtained estimate repair costs to be R5 000.

“I was told water had gotten into the diesel and damaged the tank.”

Leigh said during the summer season the generator was not a priority.

However, with load shedding in recent months and the threat of load shedding during winter it has become a priority.

Leigh said if there is load shedding and the centre has no generator it will be in trouble.

“Since July we have had to turn two patients with lung cancer away. The tuberculosis patients are also battling to breathe.”

Although she has brought her own two-plate gas cooker to be used in the kitchen, Leigh’s biggest concern are the patients and the laundry.

“Through the payments from the Department of Health and the assistance from the community we were able to keep the gates open.”

“I am appealing once again to the community of Edenvale and the surrounding areas to assist us in our time of need.”
