Food expert speaks at HCL meeting

Ron Timm addressed the myths regarding food colouring, flavouring - and other additives we find in our food - a common concern to consumers.

Past President and honorary life member of the South African Association of Food Science and Technology, Ron Timm, was the speaker at the recent Household Consumers’ League (HCL) meeting.

Timm addressed the myths regarding food colouring, flavouring and other additives we find in our food, a common concern to consumers.

“While it is true that one can get very ill or even die from consuming these in large doses, all will be fine as long as we do not exceed our acceptable daily dose.

He said the daily dose is measured in milligrams or body weight and is based on lifetime use.

Timm said a ‘no-adverse effect’ level with a safety factor of 10 is carried out.

“Multiplied by a further safety factor of 10, for the weakest among us, is an enormous safety factor,” said Timm.

He also discussed older technologies of food preservation, MSG and gluten levels in food, allergies and sell-by-dates, as well as the reliability of well-known brands in South Africa.
