Covid-19 impacts Edenvale care centre’s intake of patients
“Because the patients’ immune systems are already compromised, we cannot risk them being infected with anything.”
Edenvale Care Centre Hospice has ceased all visits to the property in the hopes of preventing the spread of Covid-19 to patients at the centre.
Sister Leigh said the spread of the virus in South Africa has not made the running of the centre easy.
Listen: Caxton Radio’s Paul Rotherham recently spoke to Dr Juno Thomas from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases about how to stay healthy.
Besides not allowing any visitors, the centre will not be accepting additional patients until further notice.
“Besides the nurses who treat the patients, the ward is in complete isolation.

Leigh said once everything has settled down, the centre will return to business as usual.
She said if community members want to donate to the centre they must call beforehand.
“My nurses are terrified of everything that is going on.
“I had to go out and buy additional masks to ensure that they had masks for when they travel on public transport,” said Leigh.
Leigh said because the centre treats patients regularly, it is sterile.
She said additional precautions such as the increased use of hand sanitiser and having the kitchen staff wear masks have been put in place.
