GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said the incident happened just two streets away from the school, which falls in the Bedfordview police precinct, at around 2pm.

“The GDE vehemently denounces all violent acts by learners upon fellow learners, and is determined to render any act of violence by learners punishable in accordance to South African law,” said Mabona.

Capt Kay Makhubele, SAPS Gauteng spokesperson, said SAPS arrested the 17-year-old learner on the evening of March 17.

“The two learners reportedly argued after school and one of the boys proceeded to take out a knife and stab the other several times,” said Makhubele.

Makhubele said the learner who was stabbed died in hospital.

“The provincial management of police in Gauteng has condemned the violent incidents by learners in schools,” said Makhubele.

Bedfordview SAPS Capt André de Jager said the station had an outreach programme at the school last month.

“We did a search of most of the classrooms, with officials from the GDE, SAPS K9 unit and EMPD officers,” said De Jager.

Phindi Mjonondwane, National Prosecution Authority regional communications manager, said the accused appeared in court on March 18.

She said he appeared in the juvenile court on a charge of murder.

“The matter was remanded until March 25 for further investigation and a formal bail application,” said Mjonondwane.

She added that the name of the accused is being withheld, as he is still a minor.
