‘Stay home so we can get on the field and play ball’

The Edenvale Imps u-8 baseball players teamed up in the comfort of their homes to send a serious message to the community during lockdown.

They encouraged everyone to stay home in efforts to limit the transmission of Covid-19.

The message read “stay home so we can get on the field and play ball”.

Lana Bell, committee member of the Giants and Imps Baseball Club, explained how the club was adversely affected by the lockdown.

“The Inter-Regional Tournament in Cape Town from March 21 to 31 had to be cancelled. People suffered a financial loss as accommodation and travel plans were forfeited.”

Bell added this was very disappointing for the players because they trained hard to be selected to represent the province.

“The junior and senior season had just ended and the seniors’ and vets’ season was due to begin. Some of the u-8 Imps players shared what they miss about baseball and how they are keeping fit while still at home.

Mashoto Matsetela said he misses meeting other teams.

“To keep fit I play baseball outside with my brother and dad.”

Ewan Scott said he missed playing catch and the delicious bacon rolls.

He keeps fit by playing with his dogs and washing his dad’s car.

Evan McKinon said he misses playing with his teammates.

“I have been practising catching and throwing with my sister, as well as playing on the monkey bars and running around in the garden to stay fit.”

Bell’s message to the other sporting communities was to remain positive.

“We all look forward to being able to see each other on the sports grounds, watching our beloved sports and re-connecting as a community. Keep inspiring your players and be safe.”
