Eastleigh artist speaks about the lasting effects of Covid-19 on entertainers
“We have all been through a tough period, so by helping each other we can grow and provide great entertainment to the fans.”
As society slowly returns to the “new normal” that has become reality, musicians and entertainers must learn how to adapt to a changing world.
Eastleigh resident and rapper Luthabo Ndlovu (Lawd Propaganda) is trying to get back to his normal life pre-lockdown.
According to Luthabo, the entertainment industry was one of the hardest hit by the virus and the lockdown measures put in place.
“From hosting a minimum of three shows a month, album releases and selling merchandise to not doing any of that was quite a change,” said Luthabo.
“The Record Industry of South Africa provided musicians with a financial stipend which did help but honestly I focused on studio time.
“While other people had more time at home and were working less I had more time to focus on creating content and coming up with ideas.”
Luthabo said although there was the option of using Facebook and other platforms to make money, he did not.
“When people pay for a show they want to experience it and a show on a screen is not the same. I’m sure artists who used the platforms made some money but I don’t think they made a large profit from it.”
Luthabo said with the easing of restrictions he has started hosting events once again.
To attract fans he started working in partnership with established artists such as Big Star Johnson.
“In a way, I feel the established artist and the up-and-coming artists need each other help during this period.
“We have all been through a tough period, so by helping each other we can grow and provide great entertainment to the fans.”
Luthabo said another thing he has realised since the lifting of restrictions is party-goers just want to enjoy themselves.
“You cannot charge people ridiculous amounts. There’s no longer a big demand for entertainment people just want to go out and socialise with each other.”
