The Kensington Lions Club will host its first Christmas market at the Rhodes Park Bowling Club on December 16.
The event aims to raise much-needed funds for community projects.
Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation worldwide, involved in many different community outreaches and projects.
According to Kensington Lion president Tracey Polkinghorne, the organisation’s areas of service are sight-related projects which involves sponsoring eyeglasses for members of our community who cannot afford glasses.
“We also raise funds to sponsor a guide dog for South African Guide Dogs, we are focused on hunger alleviation and handed out food parcels during lockdown to those in need, diabetes screening, environmental projects and childhood cancer,” she said.
While these are the organisation’s main service areas volunteers also assist the community in as many ways as possible.
“Our latest project is the handing out of toys which were received as a donation to orphanages.”
Polkinghorne said during lockdown, the club hosted an online colouring-in competition for children with the theme “Kindness matters”.
The project was aimed at keeping spirits in the community up.
In addition, a photograph competition was held which was open to all ages.
