Open every Sunday morning from 08:00 to 11:30, there’s a 5km hike that will get your heart pumping as it takes you down to the river, back up to the ridge with magnificent views and then back down to the river and up again to the top of the ridge.

In just more than a month, most will be winding down for the festive season for a well-deserved break.

Now is the time to get fit for the holiday season. There’s no need to travel for hours.

Right on your doorstep is Melville Koppies Nature Reserve and Heritage Site.

Open every Sunday morning from 08:00 to 11:30, there’s a 5km hike that will get your heart pumping as it takes you down to the river, back up to the ridge with magnificent views and then back down to the river and up again to the top of the ridge.

Hikers from Denmark, the Netherlands and Italy sign in before heading off on their hike.

For those who feel they might not be up for a 5km challenge, there is a 3km heritage trail which is more forgiving and tells you more about why Melville Koppies is a heritage site.

The cost is R80 per adult and R40 for children. There is no need to pre-book.

All income used for maintenance and security of the Koppies, which amounts to R22 000 per month.

Security on the Koppies is provided and visitors can park in secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
