The initiative aims to educate South African families about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

The initiative is symbolised by a five-metre-long fish structure.

Besides representatives from Goby interacting with Founders Hill College learners on November 2, the fish structure was placed at the school for four days to allow learners to ‘feed’ Goby plastic while the structure was at the school.

Goby, in partnership with Unicef, Department of Basic Education and Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa aims to meet the broader UN Global Sustainable Development Goals and target priority interventions for children.

While creating awareness to try to alleviate the threat to marine life, Goby aims to teach basic movement and coordination, develop sporting skills and be age-specific.

The project aims to use sport as a vehicle to transform schools and contribute towards attitude and behavioural change.

Since Goby visited Founders Hill College, the school is now competing against five other Johannesburg-based schools to collect 2.5 tons of plastic.

The school that collects the most plastic will be rewarded with a sports day and sports equipment for the school.

The winning school will have the opportunity to nominate an underprivileged school to receive 120 school desks made from recycled plastic.
