Although the centre is funded by the department of health administrator of the care centre Marlene Hooper said the facility is anxiously waiting to receive funds from the department.
“We need the community of Edenvale to help us out so that we can keep on doing the beautiful work that we are doing here,” said Monica Thobejane of the care centre.
Marlene said although donations are always needed at the centre, she said funding is the priority at the moment.
“We have two donors who have helped us keep the doors open,” Marlene said.
“I’d also like to thank the community for their donations of food without it the patients at the centre would have gone hungry.”
Marlene said because of the lack of funding staff have been on short pay for the past five months.
“It has been hard, it’s been one of the hardest things I have had to do, to tell staff that they are not getting their full salaries because of the situation we find ourselves in,” said Marlene.
“The staff have been so understanding, they saw the problem and understood.”
Marlene said although there are still some donations from the community, she said the number of donations from the community has diminished since the start of the pandemic.
She said before the pandemic, several schools used to support the centre where they could, however, Marlene highlighted that only a few continue to do so.
Similarly, fund-raising opportunities have become scarce despite the centre’s best efforts.
Despite the challenges, Marlene said this year the care centre plans to host fund-raising initiatives and appealed to the community to support them once advertised.
She encouraged businesses and community members to donate to the centre where possible.
Marlene said anyone who donates money to the care centre will receive a section 18A certificate for tax purposes.
She reminded community members that Hospice Eastrand charity shops are run independently of Edenvale Care Centre Hospice.
