Eastleigh resident calls for repair work

“I have tried so many times to get this matter sorted, but so often you don’t receive a response,” said Kendall.

More than two and a half months after municipal infrastructure was damaged during a January rainstorm, Eastleigh resident Julia Kendall raised concerns regarding the municipality’s alleged lack of response to the situation.

On January 17, flooding in Edenvale saw large volumes of water coursing through stormwater networks, damaging infrastructure.

The damaged infrastructure in question is a portion of the fence along the boundary of Horwood’s Farm and the perimeter wall along the boundary of JP Bezuidenhout Park.

Both are on either side of Homestead Road.

When the NEWS met with Kendall in February, she highlighted the damaged perimeter fence gave vagrants and recyclers easier access to the open piece of land between Edenvale Sports Grounds and Consalves Road.

In October, Kendall and fellow Consalves Road residents met with the NEWS to highlight the activity of vagrants and recyclers living on and making use of the open piece of land.

They said the activities of those living on and making use of the land posed a security risk, broke municipal by-laws and affected the resale value of their properties.

Kendall said since the wall’s collapse, the activity of vagrants and recyclers increased on the open piece of land.

“The situation has gotten worse. Whoever lives on the open piece of land has burnt plastic in the late afternoon and early evenings. The smell is unreal,” described Kendall.

Kendall said the lack of action taken by the municipality has left her and other Consalves Road residents frustrated.

“I have tried so many times to get this matter sorted, but so often you don’t receive a response,” said Kendall.

“It’s extremely frustrating, and it feels as is if the matter is being ignored.”

Although Kendall is frustrated regarding the city’s lack of repair work, she informed the NEWS she received a reply from the City of Ekurhuleni after reporting the matter on March 28.

“I was informed that the matter was brought to the attention of environmental resource management,” said Kendall.

A request for comment was sent to CoE on March 30, requesting comment by April 1 at 10:00.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
