Two of the largest ones are on the same stretch of road, Blackrock Road.

The sinkhole near the intersection of Blackrock and Hereford roads was left unattended for an excess of two months.

Although it has now been repaired, road rehabilitation is still to take place.

Further down Blackrock Road at the intersection of Emerald Boulevard is another sinkhole; partly in the road and partly on the sidewalk.

“The one at the intersection of Blackrock Road and Emerald Boulevard has been there since 2019, and it seems to get larger every time it rains,” Moloisani said.

Ward 32 councillor for Greenstone and Modderfontein Dimakatso Moloisani at the unfinished repairs to the sinkhole near the intersection of Hereford Drive and Blackrock Road.

He pointed out that both sinkholes have formed close to a water servitude and stormwater system along Blackrock Road.

Moloisani is concerned that either the stormwater drains are not keeping up with the flow of water or the system under the roads may have collapsed.

“Worse still, the underground system may not have been correctly installed.”

The NEWS contacted the City of Johannesburg for comment on the situation on April 11.

The same day, the City of Joburg’s Olebogeng Molatlhwa acknowledged receipt of the enquiry.

In its enquiry, the NEWS asked whether there had been an investigation into the cause of the sinkholes in Greenstone and whether underground water could be the cause of the holes along Blackrock Road. The NEWS also questioned what the turnaround time for repairs of this magnitude was and when the sinkholes were first reported.

Comment and answers were requested by April 13, but at the time of going to print on April 25, no comment had been received.
