Learners are guided along the many different paths pointing things out, but often they spot things that guides don’t.
St Stithians girls on a recent tour spotted a bird close to the path, thawing itself in a warm spot on one of those very chilly mornings.
Perfectly camouflaged, “it was so still, we thought it was dead,” one of the girls said.
Staff on the koppies were excited to see their photo of the nocturnal fiery-necked nightjar, a bird that is mostly associated with game reserves and wild places.
It’s known to live on Melville Koppies but it’s never been seen.
Avid hikers are invited to visit Melville Koppies to see if they can also spot the bird.
